Strangely, I was discussing the pros and cons of getting a large advance on a first book with my husband last night, and then someone sent this article to me today. It’s an old but fantastic Salon.com feature about the underbelly of the publishing industry, written by an an anonymous mid-list author. Fascinating. Depressing. Edifying. Boy, you aren’t kidding! When you think about how impressive even a $25K advance would be when you’re struggling with the question “Is it really worth spending time on this?” — this is an eye opener. I mean, to me she’s achieved success as a writer. But….wow.
